Purpose
With House of Echoes, Didier Fiúza Faustino reinterpretes the typical northern espigueiro (granary), a hallmark in the Portuguese landscape and an example of an architecture without architect. Faustino enhances its naive shape – a box with six feet and a roof – and uses recycled materials to propose a sound capsule that works as a venue for music education, a public recording studio, and a stage for concerts and DJ sets.
Designed specifically for the Alameda das Fontainhas, one of the oldest and most typical areas of the city overlooking the Douro, House of Echoes is a microarchitecture dedicated to sound experimentation in public spaces: here, listening, making and recording music are activities available to the community as a means to foster creativity, knowledge exchange, and urban renewal.
The programme is activated through collaboration with the schools from Instituto Politécnico do Porto, and through events with the artistic direction of Lovers & Lollypops.
